Junior Henderson

Campbell River, British Columbia

Pronouns: He/Him

As part of carving royalty on the West Coast, Junior Henderson is responsible for carrying on a cherished tradition as a proud member of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in Campbell River, B.C. Immersed in the rich artistic legacy of Kwakwaka’wakw Master Carvers, he began apprenticing at the age of 12 with his uncle, Bill Henderson. His passion for the art continues to grow over the years, connecting him with his Indigenous culture.

Henderson began chainsaw carving 17 years ago, and he continues to evolve his skillset of traditional work using chainsaws instead of hand tools. Henderson is helping to pave the way for young Indigenous artists. To have the opportunity to represent his people in this competition is the most important thing to him. His grandfather and his uncle have given him so much, and he sees this as his way of representing them.
