Whether it’s a curfew or a job, showing up late can be a poor reflection of your character. Adam reflected on one particular night that he came home past curfew, “I may have been inebriated,” he confessed. Marilyn knew exactly what he night he was referring to and explained that he also had a double shift at Shopper’s Drug Mart the next day – to which Adam admitted was a painful one!
There are definitely going to be times when you’re treated unfairly. Regardless of the circumstance, staying respectful and being the bigger person is a much smoother path to take than allowing someone else to fuel your anger. One of Adam’s biggest admirations of his mother is her ability to be kind to others, even if they don’t reciprocate. Being a public figure comes with many obstacles, such as being judged by complete strangers. He explained that in all the years of witnessing viewers approaching his mom with criticism she always replied, “Thank you and I appreciate you watching the show.”
Having memorable experiences with your kids is crucial because no amount of time is promised. Whether it’s a community soccer game or a local play, taking your kids to outings is a great way to bond. As a parent, you might wonder if they’ll ever remember those moments – But Adam reassured us that it’s those times that he’ll never forget. Some of Adam’s fondest memories with his mom happened at concert venues, hockey arenas and theatres. From watching her air-guitar with people in the stands to being next to him as he stood on seats to get a better view, he wants to relive all of those special times with his daughter.
In all aspects of life, patience is essential. However, it’s especially important during stressful times when heightened emotions are involved. “Things can get passionate or ugly sometimes, but it doesn’t serve you to not be patient,” Adam explained. He recalled his mom reassuring him countless times by saying, “Stop. Take a breath. Stand back from the yellow tape.” It’s those words that replay in his mind to this day during all situations that arise.
One of the most important lessons Adam has learned from his mom was given to him as he was starting out in his career. “She taught me to keep my nose clean, both literally and figuratively,” he explained. By avoiding drugs and staying out of people's business, he was able to be reliable and hardworking in all of his roles.
