When it comes to choosing a hair colour, the most important part is finding the right shade. While you might be tempted to experiment with something bold and unique, it’s typically best to leave that to a professional to avoid the risk of damaging or ruining your hair. Instead, use this time to look for inspiration and photos of what you’d like to try when you’re able to visit a salon.
For root touch-ups or colour maintenance, you can pick up boxed dye at your local grocery or drug store. When browsing the aisle, it might be easiest to just grab the first box you gravitate towards, however, take a few minutes to double-check what you’re buying. Make sure you take a look at the colour chart on the back of the box to get a more accurate visual of what your final colour will look like. Also, the last thing you want is to run out of dye mid-way through your application process. Be sure to grab 2 boxes instead of just 1. Even if you don’t end up using it you can always return it later or keep it for your next dye job.
Before diving into the at-home dye process, go through a check list to make sure you have everything you need. These are the items Sarah recommends having on hand:
Once you’ve braved the drugstore line ups and found your desired shade, you’ll be ready to get started at home! If you’re nervous – don’t be! Start with a strand test to confirm that you picked the right shade. Simply mix a little bit of the colour and apply it to a small piece of hair that’s hidden somewhere in the back of your head. Leave it on for the recommended time and see how it turns out before doing any more strands. If you’re happy with the colour, continue on!
A very important part of coloured hair maintenance is the aftercare. Opt for a sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo and conditioner. Not only is this an opportunity to support your local salon by ordering for pick-up or delivery, but it will also make a world of a difference when it comes to preserving your new hair colour.
