Just because it's freezing outside, doesn't mean we have to collectively resign ourselves to giving up on style—it just means we have to think a bit more creatively when we're getting dressed in the morning! Multiple layers become mandatory in the cold winter months, but you don't have to spend a lot of money to be both warm and stylish this season. January is a great time to purchase outwear, boots, and cold-weather accessories because you will find some of the best markdowns, discounts, and sales. Go for some of the high-end pieces on sale, think fabrics like cashmere and tech fabric outwear. And don't forget to amp up your chilly temps ensemble with some fun trendy pieces too that will add some cool textures, colours, and silhouettes to your everyday wear.

Looking for outwear on a budget? Style expert Natalie Sexton shared three outdoor winter outfits—all featuring outwear and footwear pieces under $100 and accessories under $50—so embrace your inner snow queen, keep scrolling and find your perfect winter style match!

Bright and bold colours

Want to make a bold statement with your outwear this year? Green is a huge colour for 2022. This saturated Kelly Green is still very wearable with a variety of other hues. If you are someone with a closet full of neutrals, you actually have an advantage at styling with this beautiful colour. Even just wearing an all-black outfit with this green would elevate the overall look.

Vegan leather outwear in a saturated colour is much more wearable than when it's done in a classic minimalist silhouette like a trench coat. Plus, you don't need to break the bank on a trendy piece like this! A wider cut in a maxi or midi length is perfect for layering chunky knits and thicker fabrics underneath.

Change up your sweater dresses and turn them into a tunic! This beautiful ribbed green dress is so versatile, you can wear it unrolled for more of a dramatic look, plus you don't need to wear a scarf.

To balance out the bold colour, stick to neutrals like these mocha-hued leather leggings from Zara for an elegant vibe. These stretchy pants are a great wardrobe staple this season and an elevated option to the black pair you likely have in your closet.

Quilted styles aren't just for outwear anymore and we are so here for it! This vegan leather square carryall from Pretty Little Things is a practical and trendy bag to sport this season from the office to the grocery store.

Functional and classic

Colour blocking is another big trend for 2022 but that doesn't have to mean bold and brash. You can ease your way into this trend with a softer colour palette. Don't shy away from adding a pastel colour tone into your winter outwear, it freshens up the neutral pieces most of us are sporting this time of year.

This look is all about layering. First, we have a fitted turtleneck layer underneath for warmth without the bulk in Uniqlo's patent Heatech fabric. Then our top layer is a cozy mock sweater made of boucle yarn with a stretchy soft texture. It's an updated fit to your usual sweaters with a more voluminous, boxy cut. The root cut also looks great with the sleeves rolled up, plus has hem slits for easy layering. Soft, warm, and non-itchy subtle details like a ribbing at the neckline give the illusion of more texture less bulk.

Straight-leg jeans are the must-have denim for 2022! These 90s-inspired jeans are all about a relaxed and easy fit. Plus, you can dress them up or down for any occasion.

To add a pop of colour to the outfit, we added these faux fur-lined rainboot waterproof boots in a neutral cream. This colour is still neutral enough to pair with other outfits and helps to elongate the leg but still gives you the cold-weather comfort you need this time of the year. The faux fur lining is great for warmth and the technical flexible latex foam insole is designed to offer ultimate comfort.

Plus, a great way to have fun with colour is through your accessories! Add a little edge to your outfit of the day with this bold orange bag that is not only chic for versatile. Don't forget the warm but cute accessories too. These 100% cashmere gloves are the luxurious treat to complete your outfit (and keep your hands toasty!).

Athleisure vibes

Tip for 2022: Invest in some interchangeable layers. They are incredibly versatile and can be worn on their own, together, or mixed and matched with other pieces in your existing wardrobe. The shacket has now become more of an outwear staple rather than a trend so you can feel confident in purchasing one to wear for the season to come. A punchy plaid one like this is such a fashion-forward option to the traditional tartans (think red and black) that we have seen this coat done throughout so many seasons.

Long vests were everywhere in 2021 and are still going strong this year. The vest is the definition of athleisure and gives the look added warmth and texture, like this quilted version from Zara

Sweats are definitely not just for lounging around the house anymore! To step up your sweatshirt game, go for a monochromatic colour like this one from Noize for a street-style feel and pair it with an ultra-chic matching legging rather than a jogger to streamline the look.
