Ingredients
- ---FOR THE TURKEY BURGERS---
- 1 apple, grated
- 1 cup grated sharp (old) Cheddar cheese
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 2 lb (900 g) ground turkey
- 8 hamburger buns, sliced
- grilled onions (optional)
- 1 large red onion, cut into ¼-inch rounds
- Oil, for drizzling
- Salt
- Optional toppings: 1 tomato, sliced Lettuce leaves, pickles, your favorite condiments
Directions
For the Turkey Burgers
- In a large bowl, combine the apple, cheese, onion powder, salt, and egg. Add the turkey and mix until thoroughly combined.
- Divide the turkey mixture into eight equal portions and form them into compact patties. Place the patties on a baking sheet or platter, cover, and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes or up to 24 hours.
- Preheat a clean barbecue to medium-high heat (375–400°F)
- For the onions ( if using): Drizzle the onions with oil and season with salt.
To Grill
- Grill the patties and the onions (if using) at the same time. For the patties, grill for 12–15 minutes, turning as needed, until no longer pink inside. Transfer to a plate and set aside. For the onions, grill directly on the barbecue (or use a vegetable basket), using tongs to turn them every so often for even cooking, until soft, about 8 minutes.
- Grill the buns, cut side down, until toasted
To Serve
- Top the bottom half of each bun with a turkey burger, add your favorite condiments, top with grilled onions, tomato, and lettuce as desired, and cover with the top half of the bun. Serve each burger with a pickle, if desired. Leftovers will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
