Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 2 honey crisp apples, diced
  • 2 bunches fresh sage, chopped
  • 12 cups bread cubes, preferably day old bread
  • 2 227ml cans of sliced water chestnuts, drained and rinsed
  • 3 cups vegetable broth, or as much as needed
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Directions

  1. Add butter and olive oil to a small sauce pot over medium heat and cook until butter is melted. Stir in the onion, garlic, apple, and sage. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until onions and apples have softened and turned translucent.
  2. Add the bread cubes to a large mixing bowl. Top with the melted butter mixture, add in water chestnuts, and toss to combine. Cover with the vegetable broth, using just enough to moisten the bread.
  3. Generously spray the bowl of a 6 quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Place the mixture in the slow cooker on high heat, cover, and cook for 1 hour. Reduce heat to low and cook for 5 hours.
  4. Serve alongside your favourite holiday meal.
