What you need to know to finally switch up your career

It’s a new year and for many Canadians, that means it's the perfect time to reevaluate your life’s work. A recent survey by Indeed found 35 per cent of people are considering a complete career change. If you’re one of them, career coach Shanna Landolt has four key tips to help with your 2020 transition.

Informational interviews

Speak to people who are in the career you want. Your idea of the job may be different from the reality, so make sure your expectations of the role are realistic. Ask them how they got their start and what it’s like for someone trying to break in to the industry.

Do a financial reality check

Find out how much your chosen career pays and whether or not you can afford to make the move. You can use resources like Glassdoor or Salary.com to learn if your new position’s salary can meet your needs.

Build your network

Seventy to 85 per cent of people land their new job through networking, as opposed to applying online or going through a recruiter. Creating a profile on LinkedIn is a great way to start growing your network. Speak up for yourself, let your network know you are looking to make a change.

Try a new role with the same company
