Colouring your hair at home may sound like a lot of trouble, but it doesn't have to be! Hair expert Aaron O'Bryan breaks down how to hide your roots and colour like a pro, all from the comfort of your own home. Check out his hair-colouring tips below, and watch the video above for a demo on trimming your own hair.

GETTING STARTED

What you'll need

  • Colour bowl or an old container you don't mind staining
  • Colour brush or something similar
  • Petroleum jelly to prevent staining
  • Old towel
  • Hair grips to divide and hold the hair
  • Comb

Picking a colour

When picking home colour do your research online to see which particular colour line caters to your hair type and colour the most. Pick a brand that you know has been in the industry for a long time and has advanced through the years. Check the numbers on each box and not just the picture (the picture on the box is not the result you will get but shows the tonal reflection). Match the numbers on the box to a hair colour chart online and do your research.[video_embed id='1934648']RELATED: How to give your kids an at-home haircut[/video_embed]

HOW TO APPLY COLOUR

Hair should be dry and clean during application.
  1. Wear gloves to protect hands from staining, make sure your gloves fit correctly for easier movement and they wont slip off.
  2. First work in an area where you can see correctly and is easy to clean with instant access to water, big mirror and good lighting (usually the bathroom).
  3. Apply Petroleum Jelly around the hairline but not into the hair, the tops of the ears and the back of the neck to protect your skin and minimize staining.
  4. Place a towel around the neck to catch any colour that runs and wear an old T shirt.
  5. Section your hair into a hot cross bun to manage your application and make it easier to apply
  6. Start at the back lifting each section of the hot cross bun in diagonal lines (See picture below) piece by piece.
  7. Once you have finished the back start at the front using the same process but applying the hairline last so you don't get a dark halo around the front of the hairline.
  8. When finished set a timer on your phone for the recommended time on your home colour kit.
  9. When the timer goes off scrape some colour from your roots with the back of your comb to check if the colour has adhered to the greys.
  10. If it has fully taken dampen down the rest of your hair take the remainder of the colour from your bowl and roots and run through the ends with your comb making sure you get every strand. Leave this on your ends for 5 to 10 mins but check every minute to make sure the colour doesn't go to dark.
  11. Shampoo and condition and style to reveal your shiny new colour.
