Ingredients
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 1/4 cups milk
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
8 dinner rolls
8 slices of thinly shaved ham
2 teaspoons dijon or brown mustard
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese, divided
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400° F. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter. Add the flour and garlic and cook, constantly whisking, until the mixture is pale and foamy - about three minutes.
Slowly add the milk, whisking until smooth. Let the béchamel simmer for two minutes, whisking frequently. Remove from the heat and add the dijon, salt, and pepper.
Open up the rolls and place them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Spread the insides of both tops and bottoms with the béchamel sauce.
Top the bottom halves with one ham slice. Using one cup of the Gruyere, sprinkle the cheese evenly on top of all the ham. Close the rolls and sprinkle the remaining half cup of cheese onto the tops of the rolls.
Bake for 10 minutes, until cheese, is brown and bubbling. Enjoy!
