Smiling sesame balls

When you fry this cookie dough, it burst open and looks like a smiley face. These are eaten throughout all of China and are known as a popular Lunar snack with elders and kids loving it.

Ingredients

  • 20 oz all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 10 tablespoons water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup black and white sesame seeds
  • Oil, for frying

Directions

  1. Sift flour, baking soda, and powder all into one big mixing bowl. add sugar and water and stir until dissolved.
  2. Add flour and egg and knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Pinch out 20 balls from the dough and roll them into small perfect balls.
  4. Place sesame seeds in a flat pan, and set aside. moisten balls with water, and roll each in sesame seeds to cover generously.
  5. In a medium or large pot, prepare four to five cups worth of oil for deep frying.
  6. Heat the oil to 325° F, and gently place two to three balls at a time in hot oil. Deep-fry until golden brown, remove from oil with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Repeat with remaining dough, and serve. Enjoy!
