Vegan BBQ jackfruit pulled pork

Simple vegan pulled pork made with jackfruit, simmered until soft for a pull-apart, stringy and chewy consistency that's so much like pulled pork. Mixed with a simple bbq sauce and spices - it's delicious topped on burgers with homemade vegan coleslaw! 



  • 2 20-ounce cans young green jackfruit
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion
  • 1 cup homemade barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4-1/2 cup water
  • 8 burger buns
  • 1-2 cups vegan coleslaw, optional
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro


  1. Drain and rinse the jackfruit. Set aside. 
  2. Add the olive oil and sliced onions to a medium skillet and sauté on medium heat until softened and slightly golden, four minutes. 
  3. Add the jackfruit and oregano and cumin and stir together, then add the BBQ sauce and water and stir to combine. Lower the heat to a low simmer, cover the pan and leave to stew and soften for about 30 minutes. 
  4. Remove the lid and use two forks to shred the jackfruit directly in the pan. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook for a couple of minutes if needed until just thick. If thick already, add a little water until just sloppy! 
  5. Serve on toasted hamburger buns with vegan coleslaw and fresh coriander. Enjoy!
