Ingredients
2 blocks (about 11⁄2 lb.) extra-firm tofu
1⁄4 cup black bean sauce
6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 tablespoons grated ginger
2 tablespoons crushed Szechuan peppercorns
2 teaspoons celery seeds
Handful kaffir lime leaves, chopped or crushed or 2 tablespoons lime zest
1⁄8 cup oil
1⁄8 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon honey
Directions
Lay each block of tofu on a clean tea towel and pat dry. Let it rest so the moisture is absorbed. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix marinade ingredients together. You could also use a blender.
Cut the tofu into half-inch steaks or cubes. Place them in a container and cover them with the marinade. Seal. Marinate the tofu in the refrigerator for at least four hours or up to four days.
Once marinated, preheat a grill or cast-iron pan over high heat. Lightly oil the grill and then barbecue each side of the tofu, brushing excess marinade on the tofu while grilling, until browned, three to five minutes per side. Serve and enjoy!
