Whiskey smash

This is an old-timey cousin to the mint julep, I really like showcasing this mint-citrus-whiskey drink to people who think they don’t like whiskey, or don’t see how it can make a bright and lively cocktail. A good smash requires a good muddler. You want to compress the lemon wedges to release not only their juices, but also the oils in the peel, which creates a richer taste when combined with the whiskey and sugar. Wndering what the difference between a smash and a julep is? Not much, really. A smash is essentially a julep with less strict parameters, primarily the difference is the inclusion of seasonal fruit.

Ingredients

  • 3 lemon wedges
  • 2 ounces Heaven’s Door Straight Rye Whiskey
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
  • 4 mint leaves
  • Mint sprigs

Directions

  1. Muddle the lemon wedges and a mint sprig in a shaker. Add rye, simple syrup, mint leaves and ice, and shake until well-chilled. Double-strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a mint sprig.
