We all love the ease of dresses in the summer, but when you throw a pandemic into the mix our style needs can change a bit. Throwing on a one-and-done piece of clothing is the best way to feel and look cool all summer long whether you're staying in your backyard or able to venture a little father. Stylist Alexis Honce has shared her favourite types of dresses for looking and feeling your best all season long. And if we're honest, we think we'll be wearing these well into fall and winter too!

House dresses

The classic house dress made undergone a resurgance and reinvention during this COVID-era of dressing. What was once that piece that would never see the light of day outside your home has now become a beacon of stylish comfort. While many leaned toward sweatsuits in the early days of the pandemic, the house dresses were a welcome change as the weather warmed - and these ones were beautiful enough to be worn and seen anywhere. Think flowy, breathable fabrics, oversized cuts, and beautiful prints and colours that all make you feel like you're living in a bit of luxury even if you're just working from home or baking your fifth loaf of bread this week.  These dresses can carry you through your household chores, to the grocery store, and still look chic on your girls nights on Zoom.

Midi dresses

Midi dresses are having a major moment in fashion. They're the perfect blend of classic and modern, flirty and refined, and look great one anyone, whether you're 5’2 or 6’2. These are the dresses that you throw on and instantly feel put together and ready for any event, whether it's taking your kids to the park or attending an outdoor wedding. They are the epitome of effortless chic, and in classic prints like gingham or Breton stripes, you know you will wear them for years to come. Better still, a midi dress in the right floral print can instantly make you feel like you're spending your summer holidays in Italy, and we could all use a little escapism right now.  Of course, if nostalgia isn't the vibe you're going for, you can go for a bold trend like tie-dye and really stand out wherever you go!

Sliver of skin

With no shortage of trends to choose from, it's easy to get distracted and end up with pieces that you like, but don't love on you and then go unworn. Think about your needs, and what parts of your body you really love and choose dresses that show them off. If you love your shoulders, then an off-the-shoulder piece is perfect for you. Working hard on your legs? Work them in a mini! And cut-out styles can deliver that perfect little peek-a-boo of skin that surprises in the sunlight. Whatever it is, it's all about wearing what makes you feel amazing, not necessarily what's trending this week.

Versatile Slip

Slip dresses have stepped out from their humble beginnings as the trusted undergarment and into a style spotlight if its own. Because of their sheer simplicity, they really are one of the most versatile pieces you can have in your closet - if you have a few layering tricks up your sleeve! The ideal slip dress falls below your kness and ends just a few inches above the ankle - there's no minis here! You want it to be flightly fitted but not too tight. It should flow with and just slightly away from you, and the silky fabrics should breeze against your legs as you move. Go for neutral solids or a subtle summer floral print to get the most wear out of it year round.
