Ham and cheese baked macaroni

Get the perfect cheese pull away with this ooey-gooey baked macaroni filled with tender ham and crispy green onions.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and divided
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 8 oz cooked or smoked ham, chopped
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups grated aged gruyere cheese, divided in half
  • 1 cup grated provolone cheese, divided in half
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

Directions

  1. Heat your oven to 350° F. 
  2. Lightly butter a two-quart baking dish with one tablespoon of melted butter. 
  3. Cook the macaroni in boiling salted water. Cook for two minutes under the cooking instructions labelled on the package.
  4.  Drain pasta in a colander. Set to the side. 
  5. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, and flour and whisk thoroughly.
  6. Stir in salt, onion powder and pepper. 
  7. Cook, stirring, until thickened and bubbly.
  8. Stir in chopped ham, greens and half of both kinds of cheese.
  9. Cook until the cheese has melted and then remove from heat.
  10. Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, and stir well. 
  11. In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs with the remaining melted butter.
  12. Stir until all of the breadcrumbs are thoroughly soft. 
  13. Spoon the macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish. 
  14. Sprinkle with the remaining cheeses and then sprinkle the buttered breadcrumbs over the cheese layer.
  15. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the mac and cheese is hot and bubbling around the edges.
  16. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
