Slimming turkey chili

Typical chili is filled with fatty ground beef. This version uses turkey instead and is a great source of the amino acid tryptophan, which is necessary for us to make serotonin, the hormone that keeps us relaxed and happy. It is also high in the amino acid tyrosine, which is needed to make other hormones, including dopamine, the pleasure hormone. We all know that when you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, there is nothing better than coming home to a hearty dinner simmering away on the stove.  This is a great recipe to throw into the slow cooker in the morning before work. This recipe is from Julie’s Book, Slimming Meals That Heal, published by Random House Canada.



  • 1 cup vegetable or chicken broth
  • 455 grams ground chicken or turkey
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 830 milliliter can diced tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cup red pepper
  • 1 cup carrot
  • 3 cups zucchini
  • 19 Oz Can Kidney Beans, Rinsed
  • 560 milliliter can chickpeas, rinsed
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon clove
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon salt


  1. Heat vegetable or chicken broth in a large pot over medium heat. Place ground turkey in the pot, and cook until evenly brown. Stir in onion, and cook until tender.
  2. Mix in tomatoes, red pepper, carrot and zucchini.  Add kidney beans, and chickpeas.
  3. Season with chili powder, nutmeg, mustard, cloves, ginger and salt. 
  4. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 30 minutes.


  1. Brown ground turkey in a pan with coconut oil and onion. Transfer to a slow cooker and add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for a minimum of 30 minutes.
