Spicy saffron cocktail

Bring the taste of Italy to your holiday table with this delicious drink! Debbie Travis was inspired to create this cocktail with saffron because it's all over Tuscany. It has a sweet earthy flavour and goes great with her black rice risotto recipe



  • 6 cups water
  • 3-1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 cups of ice cubes
  • 8 oz. vodka
  • 1 teaspoon of saffron threads


  1. Bring water to a boil and set aside. In a saucepan, melt the dry sugar over high heat. Watch the sugar so it does not burn – when the sugars starts to caramelize lower the heat to low/medium heat until the sugar starts to go light amber colour remove from the heat and then slowly add the boiling water. Simmer the sugary liquid until the caramel dissolves.
  2. Grind 3/4 teaspoon of saffron threads into a fine powder using a pestle and mortar. Then add the saffron to the simple syrup.  Let it cool then add the lemon juice. 
  3. Assemble with ice and vodka.
  4. Garnish with a few remaining saffron threads.
  5. Serve and enjoy!
