Steak submarine sandwich with garlic parmesan tater tots

It doesn't get much better than a sandwich and fries combo, but this recipe takes that perfect pairing up a notch. Thinly sliced beef, layered with peppers, mushrooms and onions, all topped with cheese on a toasted bun - is your mouth watering yet? And better still, serve it up with garlic parmesan tater tots for the ultimate lunch or dinner (and if you want to dish it up for breakfast too, we won't judge).

Ingredients

Steak Submarine

  • 500g (or about 1 pound) great quality beef thinly sliced
  • 2 bell peppers (red, yellow or orange) thinly sliced
  • 2 cups mushrooms, thinly sliced
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup of your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Montreal Steak Spice
  • 4 semolina submarine buns
  • 8 slices provolone cheese

Toppings

  • Mayonnaise
  • 2 cups iceberg lettuce, shredded
  • 2 large tomatoes, sliced
  • Spicy Italian eggplants
  • French or Italian salad dressing (store bought)

Garlic and Parmesan Tots

  • 1 bag frozen tater tots
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup parmigiano reggiano grated
  • ¼ cup fresh chives finely chopped

Directions

Steak Submarine

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl toss together the sliced beef, peppers, mushrooms, yellow onions, olive oil, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and steak spice.
  3. On a parchment lined baking sheet place the meat and vegetables well spread out. Bake in the oven for 17-20 minutes until the veggies are tender and the beef is cooked through.
  4. On a separate baking sheet lined with parchment paper, place the breads cut open horizontally and line with provolone cheese. Toast the submarine buns about 5-7 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  5. Remove the meat and veggies and the submarine buns from the oven.
  6. Spread some mayonnaise on the bread buns, top with the meat and veggies. Garnish with shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, spicy eggplants and then drizzle the dressing of your choice right over top.

Garlic and Parmesean Tater Tots

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. On a parchment lined baking sheet place the tater tots and bake for 20 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  3. In the meantime, in a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, parmigiano Reggiano and chives.
  4. Remove the tater tots from the oven and place into a large bowl, add the seasonings and toss together. Serve warm!
