Ingredients

  • 3 baking apples, such as MacIntosh or Ginger Golds
  • 2 to 3 ripe pears
  • 1/2 orange, zested (optional)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pie Spice Blend
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Crumble

  • 1 cup all-purpose or whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pie Spice Blend
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • Ice cream, for serving

Directions

  1. Heat your oven to 400ºF.

Fruits

  1. Peel the apples and pears and cut them into thin slices. Add the orange zest (if using), brown sugar, Pie Spice Blend, and vanilla to a medium bowl. Transfer the fruit mixture to a pie plate or casserole dish and set aside.

Crumble

  1. In the same bowl, make the crumble by combining the flour, oats, nuts (if using), brown sugar, Pie Spice Blend, and salt. Add in the butter and cut in the butter using your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture is crumbly. Grab about half of the mixture in your hands and squish it together to hold a loose ball, then break large chunks over the fruit. Scatter the remaining loose crumble mixture overtop. This two-step process isn’t essential but gives your crumble some extra texture.
  2. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the fruit is juicy and bubbly and the crumble topping is golden brown.
  3. Allow the crumble to cool slightly before serving with ice cream. Enjoy!
