Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/3 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1/3 cup dried apricots, chopped
  • 1 orange, zested
  • 1 cup cold milk, plus a bit more for brushing
  • Demerara sugar, for topping

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Toss in the butter cubes and using your hands or a fork breaks up the butter until it appears almost sand-like.
  3. Add chocolate, pecans and apricots and mix until combined— feel free to use any combination of dried fruit and nuts that you like. Add orange zest and cold milk and mix to form a soft dough.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and form into a ball. Flatten the dough ball into a two-inch-thick disk and cut it into eight wedges. Brush with milk and sprinkle with Demerara sugar.
  5. Place scones on prepared baking sheets and bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until nicely golden brown. Enjoy!
