Fire, BBQ or oven baked apples

Get the kids involved with making these fun little stuffed apples! Cinnamon, oats and a hint of sage make for a warm and welcoming flavour with each bite.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium sized or 10 small apples, whichever variety you have on hand or are on sale!
  • 1-1/2 cups rolled or quick oats
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup honey (or maple syrup for vegan option)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened and cubed (or vegan margarine or canola oil)
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt if not using salted butter

Directions

  1. Core apples. In a medium bowl, combine oats, whole wheat flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, sage and salt if using.
  2. Add butter or vegan margarine or oil and combine with pastry cutter or fingertips until all the dry ingredients are moistened and crumbly.
  3. Spoon as much filling as possible into each cored apple. Place in greased medium sized cast iron pan if cooking over a fire or on the bbq and into a baking dish if using an oven. Cover lightly with tin foil or a fire safe lid. In the oven, cook at 375 F approximately 40 minutes. On the barbeque, heat to 375 F then place pan over grill stone or inverted metal baking pan. Close lid and check after 30 minutes. Over the fire, wait until mostly coals remain then place pan in the centre. Add more wood to the sides of the fire if it starts to go out. Cook time is approximately 50 minute. For all methods, apples are done when a sharp paring knife easily pierces the apples.
