Flammekueche (Alsatian Pizza)

Bring a little French cooking to your holiday spread with this recipe. Vijaya Selvaraju shares a super easy, authentic, 30-minute recipe for flammekueche, the Alsatian pizza, a popular party food in France.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup crème fraîche
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • 1 cup thinly sliced muenster cheese (with cumin if available)
  • 5 strips bacon, cut into matchsticks
  • 1 medium white onion, thinly sliced

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Roll out the thawed puff pastry to fit a 13x8 baking sheet. Place the pie in the pan.
  3. Add crème fraîche, nutmeg, and salt to a small bowl to taste. Mix to combine.
  4. Spread the crème fraîche mixture over the surface of the dough, leaving a two-centimetre border around the edge.
  5. Top with the muenster cheese, and sprinkle the bacon and sliced onion evenly over the surface.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  7. Cut into squares and serve immediately. Enjoy!
